Section 1: Tracing and Capturing Phone Numbers

How to Trace Harassing Incoming Phone Numbers

If you are receiving troublesome phone calls and want to find out where they are originating from, you can request your phone company to set up a trace on your landline. However, the phone company will agree to set up a trace only if they deem the calls to be of a harassing nature. The following types of calls can qualify as such:

  • When someone calls but keeps hanging up.

  • When someone calls, doesn’t hang up, but doesn’t even speak. They just keep breathing into the phone.

  • Calls where the caller uses offensive and abusive language.

  • Calls that are of a threatening nature where the caller specifically threatens you or your loved ones with harm

  • Calls from a stalker

Generally speaking, the phone company will only agree to help you if you receive such calls regularly. However, calls where the caller specifically threatens to harm you, qualify for immediate action.

If you do receive such calls regularly, the phone company will set up a trap and trace device on your line which will help to capture the offending caller’s number. You will be required to keep a log of the calls that you receive and will also have to note down the time when the harassing calls usually come. This will help the phone company in tracing the calls.

However, the traced number will not be given out to you but will only be given out to the police who will then take the required action to stop such calls.

You can also subscribe to a Call Trace facility which allows you to trace selective calls. With such a facility, you need not maintain a log of all your calls. When you receive an offending call, you will have to hang up your phone, pick it up again and dial the code number given to you by your phone company. This immediately traces the number where the harassing call came from.

How to Trace All Incoming Calls

The phone company will aid you in tracing only those calls that are harassing. However, if you wish to trace each and every incoming call to your home phone, you can do that by using a device known as a Caller ID Unit. By attaching such a unit to your telephone, you will be able to see the telephone number (and often even the name) of the person who is calling you. All you need to do is attach a Caller ID Unit to your phone, subscribe to the Caller ID facility with your phone company, and you will then be able to trace all incoming calls.

However, the Caller ID facility will not work if the person who is calling you has blocked their number. In such a case, the number of the calling party will not be displayed on your Caller ID but you will only see the words Private or P on your display.

But, there is a way to get around blocked calls as well; which you can do through a facility known as Privacy Manager or Anonymous Call Rejection (depending on which phone company you use). Through such a facility, any person who is calling you from a blocked number will have to unblock their number, without which their call to you will not be completed. Once they unblock their number, your Caller ID will register the caller’s telephone number. If the caller does not unblock their number, they will not be able to get through to you. To avail of this facility, you need to contact your phone company.

Using Trace Lines for Capturing Blocked Call Numbers

Using a Caller ID facility has its limitations because it will not help to capture the phone numbers when someone is calling from a public telephone, or if their phone is blocked. Fortunately, there’s a way around this too.

You can have your own trace line set up to trace blocked call numbers. A trace line will succeed in tracing all phone numbers received on that line, whether it is a cell phone number, a landline number, or any business phone number; and even if the calling party is using a pay phone. And the best part about trace lines is that they can even capture such numbers if they are blocked by the calling party.

After setting up the trace line, you can forward your home landline number to the trace line. After this, all the calls received on your landline will automatically be forwarded to the trace line, without the knowledge of the caller, and the trace will be successful.

Thus, now you know how you can trace and capture the numbers of incoming calls to your landline, whether these numbers are residential, cell phone, or business numbers and regardless of whether they are blocked or not.

In the next section, you will find information on how to trace phone numbers from a name or an address.

Section 2: Tracing Phone Numbers from Names and Addresses

How to Trace Cell Phone Numbers

Very often people come across situations where they are trying to reach someone in a hurry but do not have their cell phone number. If you want to find someone’s cell phone number, you have the following choices:

·        Use a private investigator: If you are in urgent need of a cell phone number, you can hire a private detective to find you that number. PIs typically call up the residence of that person, or their family and friends, and try to get the cell phone number on some pretext or the other. This is something that you can very well do on your own.

Some investigators also have inside connections with cellular service providers and can thus find out the cell phone number of practically any person. However, when hiring a private investigator, ask them whether you need to pay them even if they fail to provide you with the required cell number.

Similarly, a private investigator can also be used to trace residential phone numbers and business phone numbers.

·        Cell phone directory assistance: There are many cell phone directory services on the Internet which prove to be quite useful in tracing cell phone numbers. All you have to do is provide the name of the person and the service will return you a mobile number to go with that name. But you may not end up with the right number as there could be more than one person with the same name. Providing an address to go with the name usually helps to find a better match.

Expect to pay anywhere from $30 to $100 for such cell phone directory services for each cell number that you are looking for.

·        Cell phone tracing software: Another option for tracing mobile phone numbers is to buy any one of the several types of Instant Tracing Software available on the Internet. Such software gives you access to cellular number directories and cell number databases, with the help of which you can find the cell number that you are looking for. Although there is no sure-fire guarantee that this type of software will be useful, at least you will be able to use it to trace as many cell phone numbers as you wish. This turns out to be much more cost effective than paying cell phone directory services for every cell number trace.

·        Using the power of Google: Another great way for tracing cell numbers is to perform a Google Search on the internet. This service is free to use and has proven to be quite useful in locating cell phone numbers. Log on to www.google.com and enter the phrase ‘locate cellular phone numbers’ into the search box. Google shows you exactly what to do next. This is as good a place as any to find that elusive cell phone number.

Similarly, Google can also be used to trace residential phone numbers and business telephone numbers.

How to Trace Business Phone Numbers

Perhaps you have lost your phone book and also some useful business numbers; or maybe the numbers for a particular business have been changed; or you are simply trying to find a new business number; here’s what you can do to trace business telephone numbers.

·        Use the Yellow Pages: The Yellow Pages is a directory for business phone numbers where you can find thousands of numbers related to every business. If you know the name of the business you are trying to find the number for, your search becomes very easy. But, even if you do not have a business name, the yellow pages can still be searched by business category, city, zip, and state.

If you do not have the physical yellow pages in your home, you can look up the online yellow pages directory.

·        Ask Me services: If the yellow pages haven’t been helpful in tracing the desired business phone number, then your next option is an Ask Me service. These services are like your typical directory assistance but are related to business numbers. By calling an Ask Me service, you may be able to locate the business number that you are looking for.

·        Business phone number look-ups: Several internet sites provide you with a service known as a ‘business phone number look-up’. By providing the name of the business, or a business category, city, and state, you will be able to look up the entire business number database of the site so as to find the number that you are searching for. Unlike the Yellow Pages and Ask Me services where you can trace only those numbers that have been listed by their respective businesses; with a business phone number look-up you can also trace unlisted business numbers.

However, such a service is not free and you can expect to pay between $30 (for un-guaranteed searches) to $125 for guaranteed business phone number searches.

How to Trace Residential Landline Numbers

·        Use the White Pages: Just as the Yellow Pages help you to locate business phone numbers, similarly the White Pages help you to find residential phone numbers. The white pages are searchable by name. As there may be plenty of people with the same names, your search will be more fruitful if you have an address to go along with the name. Even if you have the city or the zip code and not the full address, it can be very helpful to trace the residential phone numbers that you are looking for.

If you do not have the physical white pages in your home, you can look up the online white pages directory.

·        Call directory assistance: The number for directory assistance will depend on which phone company you use. When you call directory assistance, you will need to give them the name of the person whose number you want. You should always ask for the person’s address as well so that you can verify if it is the right person. Directory assistance has to give you an address to go along with the number if requested. You are also entitled to get up to 3 phone numbers and addresses per call, so you need not make separate calls for each residential number that you trying to trace.

·      Residential landline number look-ups: Similar to the business number look-ups, you can also make use of the many ‘landline phone number look-up’ sites available on the internet. These look-ups are searchable by name, address, city, zip, or state. Unlike the white pages and directory assistance, this service is not free.

How to Trace Unlisted Phone Numbers

While the white pages, yellow pages, directory assistance, number tracing software, and online phone number look-ups are very useful for tracing phone numbers from names and addresses; these may not prove to be that useful when it comes to tracing unlisted telephone numbers.

The only ways to trace an unlisted phone number are to hire a private investigator, or to make use of the ‘unlisted phone number look-up’ services on the internet. Both these options are not free and will require you to pay a certain fee to the private investigator or pay the charges for the online service.

Thus, these were the many ways in which you can trace cell phone numbers, residential numbers, and business phone numbers from names and/or addresses. The following section deals with finding a name and/or addresses to go with a particular phone number.

Section 3: All About Reverse Phone Searches

Find Out Who a Particular Phone Number Belongs To

Every now and then you have a phone number on your hands but you have no clue whose it is. Maybe it was a number that you obtained from your Caller ID (in the process of tracing all those incoming calls to your phone) and you want to find out who was calling you. Or perhaps you simply have some phone numbers written in your phone book but with no accompanying names or addresses. Or maybe a phone number repeatedly keeps appearing on your spouse’s cell phone bill and you’d reallllly like to know whose it is.

So what do you do in such situations? Easy; you simply run the phone number through a reverse phone engine and you’ll soon know who it belongs to!

A reverse phone engine is a product that allows you to perform reverse phone number searches using the internet. In regular phone number tracing, you either have a name or an address and you are trying to find a phone number to go along with that name. But with a reverse phone engine, you can find out the name and address of a person, if all you have is a telephone number.

Reverse phone searches can be used to find the owner of any phone number, be it a cell phone number, landline number, business number, or an unlisted telephone number. For instance, if you have a cell number with you, you order a reverse cell phone search; if you have a landline number with you, you order a reverse landline search and so on.

If you do not know what type of phone number you have, you can also find that out.

Websites that offer you reverse phone searches typically have a free service whereby you can check what kind of phone number you have before ordering the relevant reverse phone search.

Most of these websites also offer you a free service to determine whether the phone numbers you have are listed/unlisted, or national/international. It is advisable to use this free service to know exactly what type of number you have so that you can order the right reverse phone search. Since a reverse phone search for unlisted and international numbers is more expensive than the other kinds, you don’t want to end up ordering them by mistake and paying more money unnecessarily.

Thus, if you are looking for a name and address to go with any phone number, you can get that through reverse phone searches. Here, you have two options:

·        You can order a reverse phone search on any of the websites that offer you this facility. You can ascertain what type of number you have for free, but will be required to pay for every reverse phone search ordered. Expect to pay between $40 and $100 for each search ordered. OR

You can use a reverse phone engine and conduct your own reverse phone searches. With such a product, you will be given detailed step-by-step instructions for performing reverse phone searches so that you can easily determine who a particular phone number belongs to. These products generally cost about $0.00! For a zero time fee of purchasing the reverse phone engine, you can perform as many reverse phone searches as you like. We are just being sarcastic – but they truly are 100% free. J You can use any of the following reverse search engines below to conduct your reverse searches.

Some people would tell you that finding out who a particular phone number belongs to is as easy as calling that number and simply asking. However, after 9-11, people are unfortunately not so trusting of strangers and strange calls anymore, and are thus quite reluctant (practically impossible) to give out their name or personal details to anyone.
