In doing Genealogy for a number of years now, I have looked up LIVING relatives to try to gain information, but not being close to anyone or knowing exactly where to find them, I had to look for public records in locating them. You might try one or more of the following resources (all of which are FREE or have FREE Trials that you can try to resource from)
1- Google the name of the person in your web browser
2- Try Zabasearch or PeopleData.com (both of these are public records searches and you need to have a correct spelling of the person's name and you can do an ALL STATES search) THIS ONLY IS FOR FINDING PEOPLE WHO ARE IN THE US.
3- Try Classmates.com or Ancestry.com (both of sites have FREE trials. With Classmates, you can try to maybe look up a friend of the person you think might have stayed in touch.
4-Try FREEALITY.COM, Craigslist.com, CindisList.com
5-Try any of the major internet servers such as AOL, Yahoo, MSN, etc and do a people search
6- If you have any ties to the neighborhood where you last knew your friend to have lived, see if you can get in touch with any old contacts that may still be in the area.
Tracing a female can be difficult because if she gets married and changes her name, you might also have to contact your state's vital statistics office and pay for a copy of the marriage certificate.
If you are trying to trace your family tree, some really good FREE sites are: EllisIsland.org, CastleGardens.org, MyHeritage.com, SSDI (the Social Security Death Index), NARA.org (for tracing military records) or if you have a larger public library in your community that has access to the internet, you can try the USCensus or Ancestry.com (the difference between Ancestry.com's trial and that of the library is that it has limited access to areas of the website that you don't get with the FREE trial version.) A couple of other good FREE sites are Rootsweb.com, LDS.org (the Mormons' website)
Good Luck and I hope this helps!
