Gary,
Will do, thanks for your help. i am on my way down to the Contra Costa County Animal Shelter to pick up a dog. They called me over the weekend saying they had a 2 year old mal that was scheduled to be put down yesterday. I ran down to take a look at the dog and was shocked at how good the dog looked. Had a great play drive and did not see any problems with the dog. it is a small male about 55 lbs. I held a ball unde my foot and he about bit my foot off trying to get the ball. (I should know better then to do that with sneakers on !!). Anyway, I am looking for a second dog and this may very well dwork for me. I told them to hold off putting th dog down as I would take him. The frice is right......... FREE!!!

Just curious does breed or size matter for this type of use?

Watchman,
Breed no, size........ to an extent. I like to stay with dogs around 55 pounds or less. Theya re working in 6' X 9" foot cells and need to jump up on desks, bunks etc.

Are far as Breed? I am not as concerned about that. i look for dogs with a high play drive and good endurance and nerves. I have been drawn tot eh Belguim Malinois as I ahve had very good luck with these dogs. I have never had one that did not work. They also have fewer medical problems down the road and are able to outwork most breeds.

Hey Gary
Being you mentioned UK prisons, I received an unusual PM from lawman asking about conjugal visits in UK, I know at one time it wasn’t allowed but I haven’t kept abreast. Do you know if it’s now permitted and any idea what lawman’s up too? Do you think asking 4my to welfare check lawman is in order? I believe she’s just a few hours away from him.

as for lawman have no idea what he is up to
i think that may be a good idea

Gary,
I have drug dogs dogs that pretty much work all areas ofa teh prisons. We do not search visitors with the dogs. Between 1985 through about 1990 we had a agressive program where we were dong random visitor vehicle searches of all visitor vehicles comming on prison grounds. Very sucessful program. However a law suit was filed in Marin County Superior Court "Estel vs CDC". The plaintiff contended the searches were illegal as it violated their rights relevant to unreasonable search and seizure. The state on the other had contended that the prisons were well posted, informing people that once they came on prison grounds they were subject to serach. The plaintiffs also contended that the dogs scared the families and as such made them afraid to visit their "Loved ones" in prison. Crock of S--t !! Anyway, the case was heard in Marin County, which is about the most liberal court in the frigging world. The judge in the case Richard Brinner, ruled the sign at the entrance did not mean jack squat. He ruled that the state must give the visitor the right to leave rather then be searched. The states contention was the searches were an effort to stop illegal narcotis from getting into the prison. The judge's ruling, giving the visitors the right to refuse/leave in his opinion accomplished that goal. The state appealed, and pretty much rolled over. The judge cam down with a list of things that must be done in order to continue the searches. They were so restrictive taht it is not worth doing them. So right now, my efforts are concentrated on the warehouses and inmate housing units, work areas. It's tough working LE in a liberal state like CA !!!

I ran down to Temecula and picked up a Belgium Malonois that is working out fantistic. Dog had been imported and the owner was working the dog in ring sport. His wife is having a babay and did not want a dog in the house so he turned it over to the rescue who in turn contacted me. I also picked up a new Mal yesterday and thsi one also looks like he will work out well. 2 years old with tons of drive.

Big back yard yes, but still, 2 high drive dogs are too much. I have a large kennel at the prison where i am keeping one of the dogs. Thew new one is at home socializing.

Thank you for your opinion - we are happy to share any recognition letters received regarding our dogs and their finds in Ca DOCs.

Well been busy and have not had a chance to get back to you guys on the progress. Dog is doing great. One of the area's I was concerned about was when consealing cell phones in different types of electronic equipment. We have an area where they store inmate radio's and TV's. Must be a couple hundred there. I have been planting the phones in these devices and the dog has absolutely no problem picking out where they are at. In one of the training senerios I had a TV remote control placed inside the cusion of a chair just to see if the dog would show any interest. None what so ever !! The biggest thing I see as a problem is handler error. And this is no different then when training drug dogs. Handler's have a habbit of looking around, trying to figure out where the plant is rather then watching the dog. So far, so good. Plan on having the dog certified the first week in April.
